MICHAEL JACKSON: CHRIS BROWN BREAKS DOWN DURING TRIBUTE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It was what Jermaine Jackson called the tribute to Michael Jackson everybody was waiting for. But by time it was over, people were still left waiting for it to come off the way it was supposed to during the BET Awards. Chris Brown was called on to do the tribute to Jackson — just over a year after the pop star died. The tribute, introduced by Jermaine, started with Brown in silhouette in a trademark Jackson pose. He danced to some of Jackson’s tunes — complete his signature moves and crotch grabs. But things fell apart when Brown tried to sing “Man In The Mirror.” He broke down in tears — and was unable to keep singing. Fans applauded as he struggled to regain his composure, but he ended up leaving nearly all the singing to the backups. This time last year, Brown was in the middle of trying to get out from under the stigma of the felony beating charges he faced for attacking Rihanna. But some celebrities said they thought Brown’s performance was one of the highlights of the show.

Brown also received a fan award. In accepting it, he told the audience at the Shrine Auditorium: “I let you all down before, but I won’t do it again. I promise you.”
