Today In Music History – Jimi Hendrix and The Monkees?

Stranger combinations have been made but [lastfm]Jimi Hendrix[/lastfm] opening for [lastfm]The Monkees[/lastfm] was definitely an ill-fated concept.

But it actually happened, that is until July 22, 1967 when Monkees fans chanted Hendrix off the stage (some say with his middle finger in an upright position).

Here’s a little YouTube gem – an advertisement for a July 29, 1967 Hendrix/ Monkees Detroit concert that was never to be.

Check out a cheesy reenactment of Hendrix calling it quits and what Peter Tork had to say about it in an interview after the jump.
