Sacha Baron Cohen, yeah that guy who played Borat, has signed on to play [lastfm]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm] in an unamed biopic about [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm].

The film is being written by Peter Morgan, who penned Frost/Nixon. The film covers the band’s formation leading up to the appearance of [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm] at [lastfm]Live Aid[/lastfm] in ’85.

Slashfilm confirmed that GK Films has cleared the rights to some of [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm]’s songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust, and You’re My Best Friend.

Hopefully the film will get a release date close to the 20th anniversary of [lastfm]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm]’s death.  Mercury passed away on November 24, 1991 from AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia.

This movie is already overdue…I’m anxious to see what should be Oscar written all over. Best Film award at least.
