With the passing of the legendary Sparky Anderson last week, I got to thinking about how blessed Detroit has been in terms of outstanding sports leaders over the years. So this week’s Top Ten list is to try to zero in on the ten best ever. It’s obviously very subjective but check out my list and see what you think
2010 will be remembered for the loss of two of Detroit’s all time favorite baseball figures — Ernie Harwell and Sparky Anderson. I’m blessed in that I got to know both of them. I worked with Ernie a number of times here in Detroit and I had the pleasure of getting to know Sparky down in Cincinnati in 1977 and 1978 when he was managing the Reds and I was News Director of WSAI radio. In fact, when the Reds fired Sparky in 1978, I offered him a job at our radio station as Sports Director. But he politely turned us down and chose instead to drive five hours north and manage the Detroit Tigers!
After much thought, here’s my take on the Top Ten All Time Detroit Sports Figures. It was really tough because there have been so many greats. Vote for your favorites and feel free to write in other contenders in the comment section.
We’ll keep the vote going until 3pm on Sunday, November 14th and post the results on Monday, November 15th at 8am. So check back and see how your favorite sports stars stacked up.
