This week in 1968, “People Got to be Free” by The Rascals, was the number one song in the country and spent 5 weeks there. Writer and lead vocalist Felix Cavaliere, says of the song, “A lot of us were in projects, and whether they be the war or the civil rights, all of us really I think at that time had an idea of what this world should be like. And for better or worse, that naivete, still as far as I’m concerned, is where we should be. And it came out in our music. We had a stage, a platform. I just felt that besides the fact that we’re trying to make hit records and make money, we have an obligation to say something and at least let the people know where are coming from, where we stand.”
