Behind The Scenes: Tom Cruise in Rock Of Ages

Author: Stacey DuFord

Who was the rocker role model for Tom Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages (opening June 15)? Bret Michaels.  They hung out on the set in Miami and went over the Poison footage from a Tampa show.  Bret says that even though the part is over-the-top, “Tom nailed it. What I think Tom did was combine a combination of Bret Michaels and Axl Rose — sort of my look and stage persona and energy, and he takes Axl Rose’s intense attitude and mixes them together. It was great.”

Cruise also  told a reporter that he’s never really sung before and never had a singing lesson, but when he started working with a vocal coach he discovered he has a four octave range. Really? That’s the kind of range that opera singers have. Color me doubtful. In all fairness, I haven’t heard the soundtrack yet so I went in search of some reviews and my favorite is from Kathy McCabe of The Telegraph in Australia.  She says his versions of Pour Some Sugar On Me (Def Leppard) and Wanted Dead Or Alice (Bon Jovi) aren’t bad but his rendition of Paradise City (Guns N’ Roses) sounds “like it has been delivered by a munchkin after sucking back six balloons-worth of helium.”  Bahahahaha! Now I REALLY want to see this movie.
