Chances are you’ll notice fewer cars on the roads in Metro Detroit this morning. That’s because firearm deer season begins today. Technically it begins at sun-up this morning which comes at 7:24.
Michigan ranks third in the country when it comes to deer hunting. This year more than a million permits have been issued. But the struggling economy continues to take its toll. Last year more than 1.59 million deer permits were issued. 600,000 deer are expected to be bagged this year. In some past years the number has been closer to 800,000.
Deer hunters love snow because it helps in tracking the animals. This season, so far, is not going to provide any snow at least through Tuesday in Southeastern Michigan. That’s as far as Chuck Gaidica’s long range forecast goes.
The Michigan DNR reports a strong deer population in Southeastern Michigan this year.
