The Powerball jackpot started out the day at $500 million yesterday morning. Then it grew to $550 million. By the time the numbers were drawn it had maxed out at $580 million. That’s the biggest jackpot ever for Powerball and the second biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. The biggest jackpot came in the Mega Millions lottery in March of this year when the jackpot soared to $656 million.
Cutting to the chase there were two winning tickets sold with all the correct numbers. They were sold in Missouri and Arizona. The winning numbers, as drawn, were: 5, 23, 16, 22, 29 and Powerball 6
58 tickets with five correct numbers were sold. Each of those tickets is worth a million bucks and two of those were sold here in Michigan. So be sure to check your tickets because one of the million dollar tickets was sold at a CVS drugstore on Ford Road in Dearborn. The other Michigan million dollar winner was sold in Grand Rapids.
During much of the day Powerball tickets were being sold at the rate of 130,000 a minute around the country!
While $580 million is a lot of money, it’s chump change compared to a lottery game they play in Spain. A jackpot in their Sorteo Extraordinaro de Navidad (Spanish Christmas Lottery) topped $939 million U.S. dollars just last year!
