Rolling Stones Joined By Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor and Florence Welch For 2nd O2 Show

Last night (November 29) The Rolling Stones played the second of two shows at England’s O2 Arena. Like the first night, they hosted four guests.  Each night featured Stones alumni Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor reuniting with the band: Wyman for “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)” and “Honky Tonk Woman” and Taylor for “Midnight Rambler.”

The other two guest slots were taken by a guitar god and a powerful female vocalist each night. On Sunday, they were joined by Jeff Beck (for Don Nix’s “Goin’ Down,” which Beck first covered on the 1972 Jeff Beck Group LP) and Mary J. Blige reprised the female vocal part originally recorded by Merry Clayton in “Gimme Shelter.” Last night, their guests were Eric Clapton (for a cover of Muddy Waters’ “Champagne And Reefer”) and Florence Welch, of the British band Florence & The Machine, for “Gimme Shelter.”

Although unauthorized videos are often taken down, we’ll point you here to see the version with Blige, and here for the version with Welch. You can see the Stones with Clapton here, and the Stones with Beck here. (Sound off in the comments: which version of “Gimme Shelter” do you prefer? Which ex-Yardbird guitar god was better?)

The rest of the setlist was similar both nights, with the band reaching back to their second single, the McCartney/Lennon-penned “I Wanna Be Your Man” (from 1963) and playing their latest two songs from GRRR!, “Gloom And Doom” and “One More Shot.”

Next up for The Stones are a string of U.S. shows; their next scheduled show is at Brooklyn, New York’s Barclay’s Center on December 8th.
