This past weekend marked the 32nd anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination on December 8, 1980. Disturbingly enough, the album Lennon signed for the man who would shoot him five hours later, Mark David Chapman, is up for sale.

As the story goes, Lennon signed a copy of his then-new album Double Fantasy for Chapman near his home at the Dakota on NYC’s Upper West Side, as documented by this photo that circulated widely following the assassination. The signed LP was later found in a flower planter outside Lennon’s apartment building and used as evidence against Chapman, whose fingertips were all over the cover and sleeve. It was later released from evidence and returned to the man who found it originally, and first sold in 1999.

As NME reports, the signed LP most recently sold in 2003 for $525,000. Its current selling price is only available upon request from Moments in Time, the auction house that is handling its sale this time around. As the auction house states on its website, they’ve “never come across a piece with such provenance; police reports, fingerprint documentation, letters from the District Attorney, it goes on and on.”

Mark David Chapman was denied parole for a seventh time this past August and is eligible again in 2014.
