Local Sensation Owen Groesser Makes SportsCenter + Honored by Harlem Globetrotters

This morning we got to talk to Owen Groesser, the Rochester middle school basketball team manager with Down syndrome who sunk two three-point shots after the team suited him up for the final home game. His mom, Carrie, told us how the community rallied around Owen’s accomplishment and created a social media buzz to get him featured on SportsCenter.

Owen’s mom reminded us, “We’re thrilled for his accomplishment, but like I tell everybody, it’s not about the baskets, it’s about the support and how everybody in this community, and nationwide now, they have embraced him and they recognize that kids – y’know, so what if they have a disability- they can do whatever they put their mind to. And the team does not look at Owen as the kid with Down syndrome, to them he is simply Owen.”

Owen will receive the Harlem Globetrotter Junior Phenom Award along with  tickets for him and his family to see the Globetrotters at the Perani Arena in Flint on Monday, January 28.
