As Christians segue into Lent, Fat Tuesday can mean only one thing around here – paczkis. Sure they’re loaded with fat but once a year isn’t going to kill anybody. Hopefully not anyway! The all time top flavor is a gimme – custard. I don’t think anybody would dispute that. As for the rest of the Top Ten, see what you think about my list.
First of all I don’t have to tell anybody how to pronounce paczkis, do I? Okay for any newcomers (and welcome to Detroit!) the way to say paczki is “pooench-key.” They’re delicious calorie laden pastries stuffed with a variety of fillings.
By the way, the most unusual paczki I ever had was a pizza paczki. We worked with Little Caesars test kitchen to come up with a savory version of the Polish treat. It was a soft pizza dough with cheese and tomato sauce inside. Different and dee-licious! We offered free pizza paczkis to anybody who dropped by the Little Caesars restaurant in the heart of Hamtramck.
As you make your run to Hamtramck, ground zero for Polish paczkis, be thinking about your favorite.
