Did you know that there’s a farm in Michigan that is producing fresh shrimp? Well there is and it’s called The Shrimp Farm Market and it’s located in Okemos.
The farm primarily produces shrimp for local restaurants but they do have a market that’s open to the public. They’re located at 3450 Meridian Road in Okemos. They’re open Fridays from 11am-6pm and on Saturdays from 10am-1pm.
Shrimp are very popular in Michigan. We consume about 10 million pounds of them each year. Nationwide Americans devour 1.5 billion pounds each year.
Shrimpers who harvest the shellfish in the wild do a tremendous amount of damage. They drag huge “doors” along the bottom behind their boats to stir up the shrimp and get them to hop into their nets. Those doors leave terrible scars on the bottom and the by-catch fatalities are horrible. Millions of fish, crabs and other sea critters get hauled in with the shrimp and die on the deck before they can be shoveled back into the water. That’s why you always see a huge flock of sea gulls hovering around the rear of shrimp boats. They know there will be a feast.
Okemos isn’t that far. I think I’ll drop by one of these weekends and bring a couple of pounds home.
And while I’m on the subject of shrimp, here’s a really simple and easy recipe for killer shrimp cocktail sauce. Take a cup of catsup and add a teaspoon of prepared horseradish sauce to it. Taste it to see if it has enough bite. If not, add just a little more horseradish sauce. Then give it just a small squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice, one small squirt of hot sauce (not Tabasco but red pepper sauce like Frank’s or Crystal), add a touch of salt and pepper and give it a good stir.
