Stephen Stills: His Career In A Box

One of the favorite conversations I’ve had during my career was with Grahm Nash a few years ago.  He described himself as the Crosby Stills & Nash historian.  Unlike other famous groups of the rock era, Nash said he made it a point to save and document their photos concerts and writings.  As a result, he is the go-to guy when seeking material for retrospective projects.

After Stephen Stills saw the job that Graham  did producing his own box set, as well as David Crosby’s, he was the natural choice to document Stills’ career.

The result is the just released four-CD set, “Carry On”. Nash says he and CSN insider Joel Bernstein went through as many tapes as they could in order not to “miss any gems.” Among them is a jam with Jimi Hendrix from 1970, live tracks, demos and more. There are 82 tracks in all, 25 of which have never been released, including “Travelin’,” which Stills recorded when he was 17 in Costa Rica.

Crosby, Stills & Nash will perform with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at Lincoln Center on tomorrow. The orchestra is under the direction of trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.
