‘Bea Arthur Naked’ Portrait Sells For Almost 2 Million

I’m not sure what this is about, but 1.9 million for a Bea Arthur portrait is something to talk about and wonder. The topless John Currin 1991 depiction was sold by Christie’s auction house and displays “Golden Girls” and “Maude” star as an elderly woman and was bought by an anonymous bidder over the phone. UPI reports that Bea never sat for the portrait. It was controversial back in 1991, with some calling it misogynist and others a feminist statement about confidence and age. A spokes man said, “It’s historically significant — it’s radical to sexualize someone people think of as asexual.” “The painting has a visual toughness to it — but it’s also fun.” It does seem that things become much more valuable when celebrities pass, Bea died in 2009 at age 89.
