Berry Gordy: 2013 Marian Anderson Award Recipient

The guiding force behind Detroit’s greatest music will soon be honored in Philadelphia. Berry Gordy Junior will receive the 2013 “Marian Anderson Award”.

In making the announcement Monday, Philly mayor Michael Nutter said, “Few individuals have changed the course of music history as Berry Gordy — who created one of the most influential music genres of all time, managed to break racial barriers, encouraged careers for so many and entertained millions of people with the Motown Sound — has.”

Gordy will be celebrated at a November 19th gala in Philadelphia, the hometown of the famed operatic singer. Previous recipients of the Marian Anderson Award include James Earl Jones, Bill Cosby, Maya Angelou, Richard Gere, Oprah Winfrey and Elizabeth Taylor.
