Turntable Tuesday: Michigan Group Ready For The World Scores #1 Hit With ‘Oh Sheila’ This Week In 1985

This week in 1985, R&B group Ready For The World, formed in Flint, Michigan, scored their first #1 hit with ‘Oh Sheila.’ It was the first of two chart toppers for the band on the Billboard R&B chart, preceding their 1986 number-one R&B hit, “Love You Down”. The track was recorded at Silver Sun Studio in Flint.

They had performed throughout Flint at high school talent shows and were discovered by Detroit Radio personality The Electrifying Mojo in 1982.

‘Oh Sheila’ often gets wrongly attributed to Prince because of the eerily similar vocals and the title of the song which people thought was about Prince protege Shelia E. Ready for the World’s Melvin Riley denied any connection with the two artists, stating that the subject of the song was a fictional character.
