Have We Seen The Last Of CSN With Y?

Neil Young and David Crosby are on the outs over Crosby’s recent comments about Young’s current squeeze, actress Daryl Hannah. Rolling Stone reported that during Young’s October 8th concert in Philadelphia, a fan asked if he’d be reuniting as part of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Young said: “CSNY will never tour again, ever. . . but I love Stephen Stills.”

Prior to this, Crosby, who remains extremely close with Jackson Browne — who had previously had a tumultuous relationship and messy breakup with Hannah — commented on the relationship and Young’s split from his wife of 36 years, Peggi Young. Crosby told The Idaho Statesman that there was zero chance of us finding him in a divorce court with his wife, saying, “Not gonna happen, man. I’ve been with my wife 37 years, and I’m in love with her. I ain’t goin’ nowhere. 37! That’s a freakin’ miracle. And I just don’t feel the urge to go try something new.”

  • Crosby went on to throw a knock Young and Hannah’s way saying: “And I happen to know that he’s hanging out with somebody that’s a purely poisonous predator now. And that’s karma. He’s gonna get hurt. But I understand why it happened. I’m just sad about it. I’m always sad when I see love get tossed in the gutter.” He went to say that he “wasn’t holding his breath” on Young returning to the fold for a future CSNY tour.
  • Upon hearing about Young’s comments, Crosby tweeted on Friday night (October 10th): “I hear Neil said ‘there will never be any more CSNY shows’ that’s like saying there are mountains in Tibet we know Neil. . . we already knew.”
  • A fan pressed Crosby to offer up a reason why, and Crosby explained: “He is very angry with me.” In regards to a CSNY reunion Crosby seconded its improbability, saying, “believe me. . . not going to happen.”
  • This is not the first time that Young has been called out by his occasional bandmates. Back in 2012, Graham Nash filled us in on how the Neil Young and Stephen Stills’ Buffalo Springfield tour falling apart led to Crosby, Stills, & Nash‘s recent live renaissance: “The Springfield — they did, y’know, six or seven shows a year ago or something. And Neil told Stephen that the Springfield should go out this summer and make great music and possibly make a lot of money. And Stephen believed Neil and then Neil pulled the plug — for whatever reason that Neil pulled the plug. That kind of devastated Stephen. As a friend of Neil’s he felt let down, he felt disappointed that the Springfield music wouldn’t go further past that point.”
  • Nash explained to us that when he and Crosby heard that Stills had been left flat by Young, they sprung into action and reactivated Crosby, Stills, & Nash for a massive world tour in 2012: “And when David and I heard what happened, me and David went up to Stephen’s house and we said, ‘Look, y’know that we’re Crosby-Nash, y’know that we have a band, y’know that we tour regularly.’ I said, ‘But David and I don’t like what just happened to you, we’re willing to cancel Crosby-Nash tours and go out if you commit to it. And he was so touched and so touched by the realization that we really do care about him and love him. He came with his A-game, and he’s on fire.”
  • In truth, CSNY was almost built to self-destruct. Neil Young believes that from the onset, the magnitude of fame that CSNY achieved right out of the gate destined the foursome to never survive as a permanent entity: “We had no idea what we were doing. It’s not because there’s anything wrong with anybody in the band, it’s just with what we were confronted with. It changed us. The crowd. The adulation — the roaring sound. It changed us.”

JUST OUR OPINION

  • Neil Young has always used David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash as he’s seen fit — whether it be for monetary or publicity reasons. They’ve always been treated and discarded as some shirt he puts on occasionally.
  • For a guy who is supposedly so consummed and passionate about ART coming first — unlike CSNCSNY is NOT a democracy. Young decides the terms, the venues, and the backline musicians. He also earns more than the others for their tours, because, seemingly, putting out an album every nine days has earned him “street cred” (which we guess is more “important” than Graham Nash’s output — “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House,” “Just A Song Before I Go,” “Wasted On The Way,” and “Teach Your Children” — which has placed the group firmly on the charts and forever on the airwaves. It should be noted that despite the official billing on two of them, Neil Young appears on NOT ONE of those instant classics.)
  • CSN has been there to support Young’s Bridge School charity numerous times, and Young has walked on them time and time again — both in terms of recording and the road. When he enlisted them for the 2006Freedom Of Speech tour in support of HIS Living With War collection — a DOG OF AN ALBUM (quick — hum one of its songs) — they complied, and were ultimately pawns in his political and publicity game. But they remained fiercely loyal to him personally and artistically.
  • If we were CSN and Young wanted to tour with us tomorrow we’d turn him down flat. For a dude that prides himself on speaking one’s mind whatever the cost, it sure seems like he got real vindictive towards David Crosby very quickly — a collaborator who has been perhaps his greatest champion over the past 45-plus years.
