Turntable Tuesday: Johnny Nash Scores #1 Hit With ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ Today In 1972

1972, Johnny Nash started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘I Can See Clearly Now’, his only US chart topper. The track was recorded in London with members of The Average White Band.

A cover version by Jimmy Cliff went to #18 in the US in 1994. His version was in the John Candy movie Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican bobsled team. The song has been featured in other movies such as Thelma & Louise, and The Break-Up.

The song was knocked out of the number one spot by The Temptations smash “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.”

Nash is currently the owner and operator of the Johnny Nash Indoor Arena in Houston, Texas.
