The Who Hits 50 Hits Glasgow Scotland Last Night

Author: Jim Johnson

“The Who Hits 50” will take the anniversary tour to the stage of Joe Louis Arena here in Detroit next October 17th.

Meanwhile, the band certainly showed that they’ve been paying attention to fans with a staggering two-and-a-half hour UK tour opening show on Sunday night (November 30th) in Glasgow, Scotland. The band tackled all corners of its 50-year catalogue, with the obvious standards staying in the set, but with some jaw-dropping additions, such as the 1966 mini-opera “A Quick One, While He’s Away,” which the band last performed on February 15th, 1970 at England’s Hull City Hall — the night after recording their legendary Live At Leedscollection.

“I Can See For Miles” and “Join Together” returned to the setlist for the first time since 1989, with “Long Live Rock” “Squeeze Box,” “Slip Kid,” and “Magic Bus” all making returns to the show after long hiatuses. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey acknowledged the core fan base by closing the show with the 1970 die-hard anthem “Naked Eye,” rather than their customary 2006 Endless Wire acoustic breather “Tea And Theatre.” All of the band’s studio albums were represented by at least one song — except 1981’s Face Dances, with the notable exclusion of “You Better You Bet,” a concert staple since its release — and anything off of Endless Wire. 1982’s “Cry If You Want” returned to the Who’s original arrangement from the It’s Hard album, which during the 2006/2007 dates was performed in a funked up medley with “My Generation” — another war horse that was sidelined to make room for some more interesting material.
