High School Says: We MUST Pre-Approve Prom Dresses!

Just six weeks before their prom female students at a high school in Pennsylvania were informed that they would need to have their prom dresses preapproved by the faculty in order to attend the dance.

The school posted a notice on their website that said: “Women’s gowns may not be extremely short, have an extremely low cut front or back, have any excessively high-cut slits, have overly revealing midriffs, or be inappropriately revealing, giving the illusion of nudity.”

The boys were told they couldn’t wear shorts.

Many parents, mostly those who had already purchased dresses, started a petition to get the rule changed, but the school is refusing to back down.

Here’s my question:  WHY did these parents purchase dresses that break these rules in the first place?  WHY are they letting their daughters leave the house looking like they’re joining The Pussycat Dolls?

When my daughter was a freshman in high school I chaperoned the Homecoming Dance.  I worked the booth where the girls checked in their coats and (ridiculously high) heels so they could dance.  Watching some of them take off their shoes in those short, short dresses was like watching a drunk Britney Spears get out of a limousine.  I couldn’t believe that mothers let their daughters leave the house looking so … I’m just gonna say it … trashy.

What do you think?  Am I a prude?  Is the school wrong to do this?  I understand that the parents are upset that the school seemed to do this at the last minute but, again, why did they buy questionable dresses in the first place?
