Elton John and Michael Stipe Come to the Defense of Transgender Prisoners

Rather than merely weigh in on the topic in passing, Elton John and Michael Stipe have made a strong statement voicing their support for transgender prisoner rights, especially in the state of Georgia where reports of abuse have proliferated.

“Transgender women in male prisons have an equal right to protection from violence and abuse in prison, yet they continue to face horrific injustices,” they wrote, according to Rolling Stone.

The pair singled out Ashley Diamond and Zahara Green, whose experiences received attention over the past year. Diamond filed a lawsuit against Georgia prison officials for refusing to provide her with essential hormone treatments and not protecting her from sexual assault, while Green was forced to occupy the same cell as her alleged rapist.
