Smokey Robinson to be Honored By Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Besides inducting a new class of inductees annually, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also bestows another honor on musical icons once a year, with their Annual Music Masters Series. This morning, the Rock Hall announced that this year, that honor goes to Motown legend Smokey Robinson.

Each year, the Music Masters series explores the legacy of a pioneering rock and roll figures with a series of events that includes exhibits at the Rock Hall, lectures, films, a major conference and a tribute concert, all of which benefits the Rock Hall’s education programs. Previous artists to be honored by the Rock Hall’s Music Masters Series include Chuck Berry, Woody Guthrie, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Fats Domino.

Robinson, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of the sophomore class of inductees in 1987, was a pivotal figure in Motown Records, as the singer of the Miracles, but also as a songwriter and producer of many of the label’s hits. On the business side, he was also a co-founder of the label, served as a talent scout and Vice President.

The weeklong celebration in honor of Robinson will take place Nov. 2-7, 2015, and will wrap up with the Annual Music Masters concert on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Playhouse Square’s State Theatre in Cleveland, and will feature a number of (yet to be announced) artists performing Robinson’s songs; according to a press release the man of honor will attend, but not perform.
