Watch Bruce Springsteen Join U2 on Stage at MSG

By Brian Ives

Tickets for all of U2‘s eight New York City shows at Madison Square Garden quickly sold out, and for those who weren’t quick to buy them, were difficult to come by, commanding prices from the low hundreds into the thousands on the secondary market. None of their shows were tougher to get tickets to than last night’s concert (July 31), the final show of the band’s residency. Rumors abounded about a special guest.

Those rumors turned out to be true when Bruce Springsteen joined the band on stage for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” which then went into a bit of Ben E. King’s classic “Stand By Me.” Watch the video above.

Bono introduced Springsteen by saying he’s “Someone who gave us a reason to be a band, who gave us a reason to continue to be a band, and gave us a level that we can never reach but always aspire to.”

There’s long been a mutual respect between Springsteen and U2; in December, Springsteen filled in for Bono at a free U2 concert commemorating World AIDS Day in Times Square; Bono, of course, had been suffering from injuries sustained in his bicycling accident.  Bono did the speech when Bruce Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999; Springsteen returned the favor for U2’s induction in 2005, and performed with them that night as well.

U2’s tour picks up in Europe in September. Springsteen, meanwhile, has no announced plans for recording or touring.
