Duran Duran on Sam Smith’s Bond Theme: ‘I Prefer Ours’

By Amanda Wicks

Since releasing his theme “Writing’s on the Wall” for the upcoming Bond film, Spectre, Sam Smith hasn’t exactly earned the approval of his peers. It’s not that people are overly critical of the theme, but they’re not overwhelmed by it either.

Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon recently spoke to Gigwise about Smith’s theme. “I caught a little bit of [Smith’s song],” he said, “it’s not my favourite–I prefer ours.” Duran Duran recorded the theme song for the 1985 Bond film, A View To A Kill. Le Bon was quick to add that just because he wasn’t overly fond of Smith’s theme doesn’t mean he’s not a fan of the artist. “But he’s Sam Smith, he’s got a beautiful voice and I’m a big fan of him. I support him and what he stands for,” he said.

When pressed about what makes a strong Bond theme, Le Bon answered, “I always think it needs something exciting, something surprising, something that shocks you a little bit. Whether it’s a chord change, a rhythmic shift or even a lyrical twist–a surprise is always a good thing.”

Spectre hits theaters on October 26.
