Michael Stipe Covers John Lennon in Rare Live Performance

By Radio.com Staff

Michael Stipe surprised fans by opening for Patti Smith at the Beacon Theatre in New York City last night (Nov 10).

It’s one of the few times he’s performed since R.E.M. disbanded in 2011.

Fans anticipating the greatest hits were probably disappointed, instead Stipe’s six song set was all covers including Neil Young’s “Old Man”, The Door’s “People Are Strange” and John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

Check out the full set list and some fan video below, via Consequence of Sound.

Old Man (Neil Young)
Venus in Furs (The Velvet Underground)
The Crying Game (Dave Berry)
People Are Strange (The Doors)
Imagine (John Lennon)
All the Young Dudes (David Bowie)
