Benny Boom in Talks to Direct Troubled Tupac Biopic

By Jonathan Hailey

It’s been an arduous task for production studio Morgan Creek to get the ball rolling on their Tupac Shakur biopic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Morgan Creek has started negotiations with famed music video director Benny Boom to helm the beleaguered project. If Boom accepts the job, he’ll be the third director attached to the film.

Boom has directed videos for some of the biggest names in hip hop including Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Nas, Nelly and more.

Boyz N the Hood director John Singleton was first set to direct the Tupac biopic. He walked away from the movie because he felt ““the people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur.” Singleton said he was going to begin working on his own version of Tupac’s life story for the silver screen. Singleton was replaced by Carl Franklin, however, Franklin has exited the film in late October.

Finding a director for the Tupac movie has been only one of the many problems associated with the production. Producers Randall Emmett and George Furla filed a $10 million lawsuit against Morgan Creek, claiming breach of contract. Emmett and Furla allege Morgan Creek violated a co-production agreement when they set a budget, created a production schedule, and picked a lead actor without approval from Furla and Emmett.

Morgan Creek has to get things moving quickly because on December 31st, the rights to Tupac’s music will revert back to his mother Afeni Shakur. Morgan Creek is also facing competition from one of the writers of the hit N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, S. Leigh Savidge. Savidge is currently gaging interest on a film about Death Row Records called Welcome to Death Row. The film is said to be a companion piece to Straight Outta Compton and will feature the stories of Snoop DoggKuruptNate Dogg, and Warren G.
