Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He would have been 81 today.
Doug called Bobby & Stacey to share the story of how he met Elvis in Las Vegas:
“In 1975, me and my mom and dad, we went to Las Vegas to see Elvis – and there were people from around the world lining up, we had to get a reservation and we were lucky enough to get one. And while we got into the showroom to see Elvis – it was just packed, wall to wall – and he came out and I’d never seen anything like that – what a fantastic show! And they had seated us way in the back, cuz as you know as you get closer the seats get more expensive; so I had done a painting of Elvis and it was in a frame and I was only 16, so I decided to walk up and go closer to the stage…and there were some women there and they were from Michigan and they said, ‘why don’t you sit down, kid!’ and in between his songs I got the guts to walk up to the stage – and I handed Elvis the painting! He showed it to the whole audience – I couldn’t believe it! I still have it today. I called his father at the hotel, and I asked if Elvis would sign some drawings and he said, ‘yeah, I’ll make sure he gets them.” So when I got back I sent two drawings down to Memphis and he signed them to me …and I got one more before he passed away.”
