Brian Wilson made it official this morning — he will tour the U.S. and the globe this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album Pet Sounds.
The show is scheduled for Detroit’s Fox Theater September 30th. Tickets go on sale this Friday morning January 29th at 10 am.
Released on May 16th, 1966, Pet Sounds was Wilson and The Beach Boys‘ creative response to The Beatles‘ Rubber Soul. A dramatic and introspective departure from the band’s ultra-successful formula, the innovative “concept album” was a critical success that over the decades has earned its place one of the rock’s era’s landmark projects.
Wilson says, “It’s really been a trip to sit here and think about releasing Pet Sounds 50 years ago. I love performing this album with my band and look forward to playing it for fans all across the world.”
World, indeed! The more than 70 dates announced span the U.S., Britain, Spain, Japan, Israel, Australia and New Zealand — where the tour will officially launch on March 26th at the Civic Theater in Auckland.
The first U.S. date is June 14th at Burlington, Vermont’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts — a show that’s already a sellout. From that point through mid-October, the Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour will hit all corners of the U.S. Additional dates are expected to be announced.
As has been the case in recent years, Brian’s tour band will include fellow Beach Boys alumni Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin.
