Peter Cetera Bows Out of Chicago Reunion — Again

By Brian Ives

There’s been yet another turn in the drama around Chicago‘s upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Fans of the band were looking forward to seeing Chicago reunite with former bassist/singer Peter Cetera, who co-wrote and sang many of the band’s biggest hits. Keyboardist/singer Robert Lamm told Radio.com that the band would, in fact, reunite with him at the induction ceremony.

Cetera then made a public statement saying that he was not going to perform with the band.

Then, Cetera took to his official website to post an email that he’d sent to his former bandmates, saying he’d be willing to perform “25 or 6 to 4,” specifically in the key of E.

On Friday (February 5), he once again posted to his official website, which indicated that, for whatever reason, “25 or 6 to 4” wouldn’t work. “Hello everyone! I know you’re all waiting to hear what’s happening with the Hall of Fame. I know how frustrated you all are, but trust me, no one is more tired and frustrated than yours truly. I had a conference call with the musical department today and I’ve presented another song option. Right now it’s about a fiddy fiddy chance that we can hammer something out by the weekend. Frankly folks, Im done if this doesn’t work out. Here’s hoping this one works…Ill let you know either way ASAP…Ciao, Peter.”

Later in the day he added, “Ps. As of today it’s now down to 25 per cent chance of happening.”

And sadly, today (February 8), the last nail in the Chicago reunion coffin seems to have been hammered: Cetera posted another note to his website, saying that he would not be attending the ceremony.  The note, in full, reads,

“I just sent this to the RnR hall of fame people. This is the the short high road nice version of what I really wanted to say. I’ll post that response at the appropriate time. Ciao,

Hello Alex and Joel!

Unfortunately, this scenario doesn’t work for me. I know we all did our best to make it happen, but I guess it’s just not meant to be.

Personally, I’m frustrated and tired of dealing with this and it’s time to move on. I have a life with two beautiful daughters and a solo career and its time to get back and give them all the full attention they deserve.

Thanks for all your help and consideration! Have a great show and please send any individual award I receive to the contact you have for me.

All the best, Peter Cetera”

We’re curious what the not-“nice” version of this letter would say. But sadly, it looks like the Chicago/Cetera reunion is not going to happen.

The 31st Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. HBO will broadcast the ceremony in spring 2016. Tickets for the show are on sale now, but be warned: no performances have been announced yet.
