Steve Kostan Remembers Prince

By: Steve Kostan

One of the cool things for me about being on WOMC was getting to play the music of Prince. Not only was he an outstanding performer, songwriter, singer etc. Prince was an outstanding Guitarist.

My late friend Steve Fortney guitar-teched for Prince during the Purple Rain tour and went to the French Riviera with him for the filming of the movie “Under a Cherry Moon.”

Steve was a huge hard rock guitar fan. Loved the likes of AC/DC, Aerosmith, Judas Priest etc. He had guitar-teched for Brownsville Station, Mark Farner (Grand Funk) and for long time Ted Nugent. Steve knew a great guitarist when he saw one. Prince would tear it up on guitar, playing some of our fave metal songs during sound check.

Prince would also have my friend Steve play his guitar while Prince would sit in different seats in the empty arena to check the sound. Remember that white guitar in the movie Purple Rain? There were actually 2 of them on tour. Prince had slam dunked one behind his back at the end of particularly scorching solo and broke off part of the fretboard. Steve had to get in repaired here in Detroit while Prince was doing his shows at Masonic. 1986. I got to hold it the night before it was taken to the repair shop. Opening the case, for a minute I thought I heard music and it seemed to glow.

What a talent. What a shame.
