By: Jon Corrigan

Well, this is the most heartbreaking thing you’ll watch today.

Bretagne, the last known surviving that aided in the September 11, 2001 search and rescue efforts, was euthanized peacefully on Monday in Texas. She was 16 years old.

The golden retriever, part of the Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1), was 2 years old when she was deployed to the World Trade Center site as a FEMA Search and Rescue Canine with her handler Denise Corliss.

Bretagne met Corliss when she was 8 weeks old.

According to a memorial from TX-TF1, Bretagne aided in nearly a dozen disasters, including 9/11 and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ivan.

Bretagne received a hero’s salute walking into the vet’s office for the last time on Monday from her fellow rescue workers at the Cy-Fair, Texas Fire Department.
