Shark Fun Facts for Shark Week

Sharks have a bad reputation but did you know that pigs kill more people per year than sharks? Here are a few more fun facts as we celebrate Shark Week.

  • Shark teeth were one of the first tools used by humans. (How did they get them?)
  • Sharks are cold-blooded, except for the Great White.
  • Sharks basically have a conveyor belt of teeth. If they lose teeth they have some in the back that move forward and they regenerate more.
  • Sharks have no bones. Their skeletons are cartilage so they are very flexible.
  • Bull Sharks have been spotted in the Mississippi River.
  • The largest sharks tend to be the most harmless. They eat plankton by swimming with their mouths open.
  • Sharks can smell one drop of blood in one million drops of water.
  • Even though they are thought of as cruel, sharks have large hearts with four chambers – just like humans.
  • Baby sharks are born with teeth and the ability to hunt. They have to get independent quickly so their mothers don’t eat them.
  • Sharks can see almost as well behind them as they can in front of them.
