The next few months are prime-time to enjoy the Michigan outdoors especially camping. Thrill List promotes the fact that Michigan has more forest land that any other state in the Eastern US. The true disconnect getaway that connects with nature is camping in the Upper Peninsula.
Fourteen spots in the U P to consider on the Thrill List include the obvious, Isle Royale, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, and Tahquamenon Lower Falls Campground. Then there is Summer Island, near the end of Garden Peninsula. Considered very remote, is has been excavated for Native American artifacts. To the straits of Mackinac is Government Island which is Federally owned and uninhabited with just a picnic table and a fire pit. There are no fees to occupy Government Island for a secluded camping adventure. The complete list is here.
