Detroit’s Top 10 Songs Of The 1970’s

Marvin Gaye has reached number-one again!

His 1971 classic “What’s Going On” tops an online poll of the Motor City’s Greatest Songs of the 1970s.

The Detroit Free Press says that from more than 100,000 songs suggested, Marvin’s socially conscious anthem outpaces songs by such other legendary locals as Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, Edwin StarrSmokey Robinson, The Temptations, Diana Ross and Alice Cooper.

Here’s the Top 10:

  1. “What’s Going On” – Marvin Gaye
  2. “Night Moves” – Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
  3. “Old Time Rock and Roll” – Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
  4. “Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours” – Stevie Wonder
  5. “War” – Edwin Starr
  6. “The Tears of a Clown” – Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
  7. “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” – The Temptations
  8. “Turn the Page” – Bob Seger
  9. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Diana Ross
  10. “School’s Out” – Alice Cooper

Elsewhere in the Top 25, fans voted Brownsville Station‘s “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” number-11, Ted Nugent‘s “Stranglehold” 16 and “Cat Scratch Fever” 18, The Spinners‘ “Rubberband Man” 20th, just ahead of the same group’s “I’ll Be Around” at 22 and “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” at 23, and Rare Earth is at 21 with “I Just Want to Celebrate.”
