As a former First Lady and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is accustomed to greeting dignitaries — prime ministers, ambassadors, royalty from around the world. For Apple Music’s The 411, the Democratic nominee from president sat down with a different kind of VIP: Mary J. Blige. They discussed faith, accepting criticism, and police brutality. Regarding the latter, Blige sang some bars from Bruce Springsteen’s “American Skin.”

“People close to you have said there’s a disconnect between who you really are and who people perceive you to be. What do you want people to know about who you really are?” quizzed Blige.

“I guess the way I would approach that question is to say, look, I think I’ve always been the same person,” answered Clinton. “I do believe that when you’re in the public eye, whether it’s in entertainment or in politics, you do have the challenge of presenting yourself and having people perceive you as who you think you are.”
