The New York and London productions of Lazarus, the David Bowie musical, have served as excellent surrogates and curators of his legacy this year. From mounting public performances to fielding questions about Bowie’s impact, the musical has kept us talking about fresh, contemporary Bowie material despite his death in January. It’s a fitting tribute to an artist who rarely dwelled in the past and kept making music through the very end of his life.

This Friday, a two-disc cast recording will contain audio from the musical as well as previously unreleased Bowie songs, including “When I Met You.” As one of the last tracks the icon ever recorded, the song provides another window into Bowie’s mind while he faced the progression of his private illness.

BBC Radio 6 debuted “When I Met You” and it starts here around the 51 minute mark.
