After I read a few of your memories about the ROLLING STONES-SANTANA-IGGY concerts I decided to make it the main topic today and get more of your stories. Mike Skill of the ROMANTICS had great one. Check it out on my F-Book page. I know many of you do too. Heck over 152,000 of “youse” went to that one. I remember @ the Home of Rock&Roll it was all hands on deck. We all met at the station at 7:00am, got our assignments and jumped into station trucks with the engineers. Jim Johnson was sent to the Pontiac Airport and caught the guys landing. Ken Calvert headed out to the Dome after his show and Arthur, Karen, Carl Coffee and I were all there too doing reports. A radio station had never deployed such a full court press before and it was great. We had just gotten a new radio toy that enabled us to send the reports back from the Silver Dome which was radical a new thing. By the time the concert started, some of us were running on fumes.
I had high hopes for Iggy, who had released 5 foot 1 a few months earlier. He was “greeted” by the crowd and was promptly Boo and Pelted. That would be a great song title for him! Santana was phenomenal and the Stones were ‘Loose and Rockin.’ Hey another song title! We radio and record types were all the way up, up ,up in the Silver Dome press box. There must have been 200 people up there with Jocks from ABX, record guys, Seger folks, and other people who knew people. Oh yeah, full bar. Thing is, while it was a great party, we weren’t exactly up close. I know most of you were closer and have your own tales of those 2 great nights. NOV. 30th and DEC 1 st 1981. Hey 35 years! Please share YOUR stories. You can comment on my F-Book page OR If you want to post on the WOMC page, create and account (upper right corner) and have at it. I’m looking forward to reading ’em.
